Tools Required For Cutting Tiles

Before you get started, make sure you have all the right tiling tools, including:

Step-By-Step Guide to Cut Tiles

Whether you’re cutting wall tiles, floor tiles, large-format tiles, or outdoor tiles, these 4 steps will help you get a clean and accurate cut every time.

  1. Prepare the area

Start by removing existing tiles or substrate. Smooth and clean the area to create a flat, even surface for tiling.

  1. Mark your tiles & obstacles

Use a tape measure to measure the area before setting out and marking where tiles need to be cut – this is especially important when tiling around plugs, sockets, or obstacles.

  1. Cut your tiles

If using a wet saw tile cutter:

  • Ensure your blades are clean and sharp, and that your saw is set up with water.

  • Following your markings, feed the tile slowly towards the blade. Don’t force it. Apply gentle pressure, and the blade will do the rest.

If using a manual tile cutter:

  • Use a tile scoring wheel to score a 3-5mm line for a precise cut.

  • Ensure your tile is secured to a workbench, and carefully move the tile cutter towards the tile. Apply gentle pressure, moving the cutter along the score line.

  1. File the edges

Key Considerations Before Cutting Tiles

Taking the time to plan and prep for your tiling project can make a huge difference to the end result. Before cutting your first tile, ask these questions:

  • How big is the area you're working in?

  • What types of tiles are you cutting?

  • How many tiles do you need to cut?

  • Which is the best tile cutter for your tile type?

  • Have you got all the relevant tiling tools?
