How to Cut an Outdoor Tile

15/12/2025

Whether you’re tiling an outdoor patio, fixing outdoor tiles in a swimming pool, or adding decorative mosaic detailing, it’s important to cut outdoor tiles with precision. From large-format tiles and porcelain slabs to cobbles and bricks, having the right outdoor tile cutter can make all the difference to the speed, quality, and finish of your outdoor tiling project.

Why Cutting Outdoor Tiles Needs Extra Care

When you’re tiling outside, you’re often working with thicker materials, and in a different environment with unpredictable variables, such as:

  • Exposure to wet weather, which can make surfaces slippery and increase the risk of cutting mistakes.

  • Working with larger, heavier, and thicker tiles can be harder to cut.

  • Tiling uneven surfaces that may need levelling or precision fitting.

A standard manual, electrical or small tile cutter may not be enough to get the job done. Choosing the correct outdoor tile cutter compatible with the tile material you’re using is key.

Wet vs Dry Tile Cutting

The type of outdoor tiles you’re working with will determine whether a wet or dry cut would be most effective. But what’s the difference? A wet saw tile cutter, like the DeWalt D36000 940mm Wet Saw, uses a water-cooled diamond blade to cut through large, dense tiles. Dry tile cutters can be manual or electric, such as the Bosch GWS 7 115 Angle Grinder. These are better suited to smaller projects and thinner tiles – but they generate much more dust!

Step-by-Step Guide to Cutting Outdoor Tiles

Follow our handy guide on how to cut outdoor tiles for a professional finish, first time, every time:

Choose the Right Tile Cutter and Blade

Mark and Prepare the Area

  • Use a tape measure to carefully measure your tiles and mark where you need to cut. For fragile materials, apply masking tape over the cut line to help reduce chipping.

  • Ensure your tile cutter is on a stable surface and you have an appropriate water feed for wet cutting or dust extraction for dry cutting.

Cut Your Tile

When using wet saws:

  • Ensure water is flowing on your wet saw or electrical wet saw before starting the blade.

  • Wearing appropriate safety clothing, feed your tile slowly towards the blade.

  • Don’t force it; the blade will do the work.

When manual cutting:

  • If you're cutting tiles with an angle grinder, score a 3-5mm cut before completing the final cut. This will reduce stress on the tile.

When cutting large tiles

  • Ensure large-format tiles are fully supported, especially if there’s an overhang, when cutting.

  • Use a tile cutter suitable for large-format tiles, such as the Raimond Zoe 105 Advanced Bridge Wet Saw.

Smooth the edges & lay your tiles
