Step-by-Step Guide for Installing Outdoor Tiles
Prepare the Area
Using a tape measure, string, and chalk, measure and mark the area you intend to tile. Remove any existing tiles, stone or turf and excavate to a depth that will accommodate your subbase and adhesive layers, as well as the thickness of your tiles – you want them flush with the ground.

Ensure Adequate Drainage
It’s essential that water doesn’t pool on top of your tiles. To avoid this, ensure there is a gradual slope away from any structures and towards a drainage point. This should be a gentle decline of 1.6 to 1.8cm drainage fall per metre.

Install Your Subbase
A secure subbase is the foundation for your outdoor tiling. Using sand, mortar or a Type 1 MOT sub-base, add a 100-150mm layer. Compact the subbase into place, checking the drainage fall as you go. For a smooth finish and an even surface to tile upon, you can also apply a layer of quick-drying screed.

Prepare Your Tiles
Different types of tiles will require more preparation than others. For example, porcelain tiles are non-porous, so they need to be primed to ensure a strong bond with the adhesive. Most natural stone is porous, so if you want to extend its lifespan, you can seal it to increase its resistance against staining and weathering.
When installing outdoor tiles, working to a pattern will ensure a quicker process and an accurate finish. Check your pattern to see if any tiles need to be cut around existing features or to fit the space. Wet saw tile cutters, electric tile cutters or manual tile cutters are all suitable for outdoor tile cutting. After cutting tiles, use a tile file such as the PREMTOOL Diamond Rubbing Pad to smooth rough edges.

Apply Slurry Primer or Tile Adhesive
Using a trowel, apply a layer of slurry or tile adhesive to the back of the tile. Ensure a full, even coverage before placing onto the subbase.
Depending on the type of tiles you’re installing, you'll want the right adhesive for a strong, secure bond. For porcelain tiles, look for a slurry primer such as ProJoint Porcelain Primer, Larsen Priming Slurry or Ultra Scape Pro-Prime Bonding Mortar. For natural stone tiles, adhesives such as PREMTOOL, Ardex, and Laticrete will help keep your tiles in place.

Lay Your Tiles
Depending on your tiling pattern, you may lay your first tile in a corner or in the middle of your feature. Either way, make sure that the first tile is laid evenly, as it will guide the rest.
Use a spirit level to check that it’s level and tap it with a rubber mallet to secure it in place. Following your pattern to lay the rest of your tiles, using a tile levelling system and tile spaces to ensure even gaps in between each one.

Install Outdoor Tile Trim
If you need to cover, neaten or protect the exposed edges of your outdoor tiles, you can install outdoor tile trim at this point. Cut your tile trim to the correct size and insert the foot of the trim under the bottom of your tile. Press it into place so the front of the trim sits snug against the edge of your tile.
Select the right type of trim to match your tiles from our wide selection of outdoor tile trims. Our range includes leading brands and styles such as PREMTOOL Straight Edge Brushed Anthracite Stainless Steel, Schluter RONDEC-EB Round Edge, and Genesis Stainless Steel Formable Straight Edge Tile Trim.
Clean As You Go
As you go along, we recommend cleaning any access grout so it doesn’t dry, harden and become more difficult to remove – potentially damaging your tiles. Have a bucket of soapy water and a grout sponge, such as the PREMTOOL Hydro Sponge, to hand and wipe down after grouting each joint.
