What Is a Suction Cup Used For in Tiling?
A tile suction cup creates an airtight seal against a flat, non-porous surface. Once the air is pushed out, atmospheric pressure holds the cup firmly in place, giving you a secure handle to lift, carry, position, or manoeuvre materials that would otherwise be difficult or dangerous to hold.
For tilers, suction cups are particularly useful when handling large or heavy tiles that are difficult to grip by hand. They can help improve control while reducing the effort required to move the material.

1.Vacuum Suction Cups
A vacuum suction cup is a tool that grips a smooth surface by creating a low-pressure area (vacuum) between the suction cup and the material. Unlike a traditional suction cup, where you create the vacuum manually with a lever or pump, an electric model uses a motor to generate the vacuum.

How to Choose a Suction Cup
A good suction cup provides a secure grip, helping you lift, position, carry, and adjust heavy or awkward tiles with greater control. They vary in design, lifting capacity, handle configuration, and the surfaces they can grip. Several factors should be considered when you choose a suction cup such as:
1. Check the Weight Rating
Every suction cup has a maximum load rating, usually stated in kilograms. Always choose a cup rated well above the actual weight of your tile or slab, particularly for large format porcelain, which can be significantly heavier than it looks. Undersizing your suction cup is the single biggest cause of dropped materials on site.
For example, the Sigma Aluminium Suction Cup is ideal for smooth tiles and has a maximum lifting capacity of 50 kg, while the Rubi GSC-200 Vacuum Cup is better suited for handling large-format tiles and can lift up to 110 kg.
2. Consider the Tile Surface
Suction cups work best on clean, smooth, non-porous surfaces. Dust, grout residue, moisture, textured finishes, uneven surfaces, and contaminants can reduce the seal and affect holding performance. Before attaching the cup, make sure both the suction pad and the tile surface are clean.

How to Use a Suction Cup
Using a suction cup correctly is just as important as choosing the right one.
Before lifting, inspect the suction pad for dirt, damage, cracks, or excessive wear. Clean the tile surface and ensure it is suitable for vacuum attachment.
During the process, place the cup firmly against the surface and engage the locking or pumping mechanism according to the manufacturer's instructions. Check that the cup has established a secure vacuum before lifting.
When handling large-format tiles, use the appropriate number of people and lifting equipment for the material. A suction cup should not be treated as a substitute for a suitable team lifting method when the tile is too large or heavy for one person.
