What Is Ditra Matting?
Ditra is an industry expert in tile matting. With a range of uncoupling tile mats, they offer foundational support for any tiling project. Ditra matting is designed to reduce the risk of your floor tiles cracking or moving due to thermal fluctuations, and works with a variety of tile types, sizes and substrates, including underfloor heating systems. The Ditra tile matting range includes:
Schluter DITRA-PS Peel & Stick Self-Adhesive Uncoupling Membrane
Schluter DITRA-HEAT-E Matting, Schluter DITRA-Heat-DUO Thermal Matting
Schluter DITRA-SOUND Anti-Crack & Sound Insulation Matting Sheet
Can Tile Adhesive Be Used On Tile Matting?
Yes, tile adhesive can and should be used on tile matting as it helps the matting stay in place and builds a stable, long-lasting foundation for your tiles. However, choosing the right tile mat adhesive is what can make all the difference to your tile matting’s performance and, therefore, the durability of your tiled floor or wall.
Some types of tile matting, such as peel-and-stick mats, are designed, as the name suggests, to stick to your substrate without an adhesive layer underneath. But in most instances, tile adhesive is essential.

Best Tile Adhesive For Ditra Matting
Tile matting and tiles work best with a flexible tile adhesive, such as S1 Classified adhesive. S1 is a cement-based adhesive known for its high deformability (flexibility). This means it's compatible with a variety of tiles such as large-format, natural stone and mosaic tiles.
S1 is also designed for substrates with significant movement, vibration, or thermal expansion, which can impact the structural integrity of your tiles. By using an S1 tile adhesive, your Ditra matting will absorb more movement from screed, timber flooring, plywood, or underfloor heating systems.

How To Apply Tile Adhesive To Tile Matting
Prep your substrate
Ensure your substrate is clean and dry before starting.
Apply your tile adhesive
Use a 3x3mm or 4x4mm notched trowel to apply an even level of tile adhesive to your substrate (based on the matting manufacturer's recommendations). If you’re using DITRA Peel & Stick Self-Adhesive Uncoupling Membrane, you can skip this step.
Lay your matting
Roll out your Ditra matting into the adhesive and press firmly. Use a tile matting roller to remove any air pockets.
Apply another layer of adhesive
Use the flat side of a trowel to apply a layer of tile adhesive on top of your tile matting, ensuring to fill the cavities of your matting. Apply a second layer, this time using the trowel's notched side.
Lay your tiles
Install your tiles directly onto the wet adhesive for a strong, stable bond.
