What Is A Gauging Trowel Used For?

01/07/2025

When you're tackling a tiling, bricklaying, or plastering job, having the right tools is essential for achieving professional results. One such indispensable tool is the gauging trowel. But what is a gauging trowel used for, and how does it differ from other trowels? In this post, we'll explore the uses of a gauging trowel, different types available, and how it compares to similar tools and trowels.

What Is a Gauging Trowel?

A gauging trowel is a versatile hand tool typically used in plastering, tiling, and masonry work. It features a rounded, pointed blade used to aid in the mixing up and moving of tile adhesive or tile grout. The design allows for precise application and controlled mixing, especially in tight or confined spaces.

Gauging Trowel Uses

What is a gauging trowel used for? Here are some of the most common gauging trowel uses:

  • Small Batch Mixing: Ideal for mixing small amounts of plaster, mortar, or adhesive, making gauging trowels perfect for when large-scale mixing isn't necessary.

  • No Waste Application: The rounded edge makes it easier to scoop, spread, and apply mixtures, such as tile adhesive, without waste.

  • Precision Work: Its narrow shape allows for detailed work in corners, cracks, and small repairs.

  • Patching Up: Use it to fill in cracks or touch up areas with minimal material.

  • Transferring Mix: Great for transferring adhesive from your mixing bucket directly onto a surface.

How To Use A Gauging Trowel

Hold it like a standard tiling trowel and use the curved blade to scoop and apply material smoothly. It’s especially handy for mortar repair work where you need to be neat and exact.

What Is The Difference Between a Gauging Trowel and a Bucket Trowel?

A gauging trowel has a rounded tip and a v-shaped back, usually used for mixing adhesive and applying small amounts. Whereas, a bucket trowel is a full-size trowel with a cut-off blade, usually used for scooping large amounts of adhesive from a mixing bucket.

What Trowel Do I Use For Tiling?

Outside of gauging trowels, here are descriptions of many types of tiling trowels available at Pro Tiler Tools, and which part of a project they are useful for:

  1. Notched Trowels: A notched trowel allows you to evenly spread tile adhesive or mortar with a grooved pattern when tiling, ensuring consistent and even application and a strong bond between the tile and substrate. We also stock v notched trowels.

  2. Margin Trowels: Margin trowels make applying tile adhesive to tight spaces and corners, where a larger trowel cannot reach, easier. They are ideal for finishing around windows, in corners, and for precise tile installation in any confined area, the Vitrex 150mm Margin Trowel is a great example.

  3. Plastering Trowels: A plastering trowel is a specialized tool used for applying, spreading, and smoothing plaster or other materials, such as self levelling compound. The Kubala Extra Large Stainless Steel Plastering/Self Levelling Trowel is made of high-grade stainless steel, and is perfect for applying self-levelling compounds, floor screed, mortars, and adhesives, and for thermal insulation works.

  4. Screeding Trowels: Screeding trowels are specifically designed to help you create an even, flat finish on surfaces such as concrete, plaster, and other materials. The RST Wooden Handle Flooring Trowel has a tempered carbon steel blade for use in all floor screeding and levelling applications.

  5. Bucket Trowels: Whether you need a bucket trowel or bucket scoop trowel we stock adhesive trowels from well-known manufacturers such as a Marshalltown bucket trowel, Beava bucket scoop, Ox bucket trowel, or Rubi bucket trowel.
