Marmox Thermoblock: Reducing Heat Loss At The Wall Floor Joint

07/09/2022

What Is Thermoblock?

Marmox Thermoblock is a load-bearing insulation block designed to replace the course of bricks or blocks at the bottom of a wall to solve cold bridging at the wall-floor junction. Thermoblock insulation is suitable for use in masonry, timber-framed and steel-framed walls.

Cold bridges occur where the wall meets the floor but until recently it was impossible to place insulation under a supporting wall because the insulation would have been crushed. It was for this reason that Marmox Thermoblock was developed. With a thermal conductivity of 0.047W/mK strong enough to withstand a load of 9N/mm2, the Thermoblock is designed to reduce heat loss at the wall-to-floor junction.

What Is Thermoblock Made From?

A 60mm thick core of fire-resistant XPS insulation encases two rows of high strength, low conductive, epoxy-concrete columns. Using Carbon Nano Tubes - the latest innovation in technology, these 2.5mm thick layers of fibre reinforced polymer concrete fix to the top and bottom surfaces of the block.

Where Is A Thermoblock Used?

Typically, a Thermoblock is used at the base perimeter of walls. For example at a:

  • Masonry Cavity Wall junction with a concrete slab
  • Masonry Cavity Wall junction with a block and beam floor
  • Timber Frame Wall junction on a concrete slab
  • Timber Frame Wall junction with a suspended timber floor
  • Masonry Cavity Wall junction with a suspended timber floor

However, they can be used in other areas too, including:

  • Underneath a concrete slab, below a timber frame
  • Underneath a solid wall
  • Underneath a door threshold
  • Internal and party wall junction to the floor
  • Wall junctions with non-grouted floors
  • Roof eave to wall junction
  • At the base of parapets

What A Thermoblock Is NOT

Thermoblock is NOT a thermal block/aerated block/AAC/aircrete block which are lightweight thermally insulating building blocks. Marmox Thermoblock is a thermal bridging block, typically used at the base of wall made of thermal, aerated blocks, specifically to eliminate the cold bridge.

Why Use Thermoblock?

With an ever-increasing cost of living and doing business, calls for better insulation of both residential and commercial properties and therefore the need to be more energy efficient, it is worth recognising that the wall floor junction which can contribute up to 30% of a building's total heat loss. This not only has a big impact financially but also environmentally, with approximately 40% of all the world's greenhouse gases coming from buildings. By reducing or eliminating thermal bridges, these greenhouse gas emissions can be reduced by almost a third, saving money and reducing environmental impact.
